Anke Ruigrok, freelance Data Consultant (Flex4data), on the specialist training Metadata Management
Freelance Data Consultant (Flex4data)
Anke Ruigrok has been working in the data field for over twenty years, in a variety of roles. For the past five years she has been working as an independent consultant. She is currently engaged by Enexis Groep as a metadata specialist. Her task: implement data management at Enexis and get the metadata in order.
Why did you choose the CDMP Specialist training Metadata Management?
"Metadata management is a relatively new discipline in the data world. We are increasingly realising how useful it is to clearly describe what type of data lives in a given database. The same applies to Enexis. They work with an enormous number of applications, but at a high level there is no clear picture of which data sits where. That is why tooling was purchased to get metadata management under control. My job is to implement that tooling. I signed up for the training because I wanted to be inspired."
Why did you choose Connected Data Academy?
"I had been wanting to take a metadata training much earlier, but it never happened. Three years ago I took the CDMP Fundamentals training at another training institute. I am enthusiastic about DAMA DMBoK, and I can re-read the metadata management chapter myself, but I wanted some inspiration around it. I also wanted to prepare properly for the exam. On LinkedIn I saw a post from Connected Data Academy: training on Friday, exam on Monday. Exactly during a weekend when my husband was away. A few clicks and I was signed up."
What did you think of the quality of the CDMP Specialist training Metadata Management?
"The training delivered exactly what I was looking for, perhaps even more. I was mainly looking for best practices and those were covered in depth. I got many tools to better take up my current role. For example, at Enexis I had enthusiastically started implementing the tool, but I realised it was better to first spend more time on the how and why of metadata management: what exactly do we want to achieve with it? What does that mean for how we set up the system? Along the way it is also good to occasionally pause as a whole team on those questions, sit down together and recalibrate. That insight I really gained during the training. The Specialist training uses the same book as the Fundamentals training. I see that as an advantage, because I already know the material, but now I read it much more carefully and can connect it to my own experience. I notice that I now pause much more on the material and think: maybe I should pay more attention to this, because then the rest will fly. Those moments did not happen when I had to know the whole book for the Fundamentals exam three years ago. A final advantage of the training were the discussions with like-minded peers. Everyone taking the training is working on the same questions. That immediately produces in-depth discussions. On top of that, fellow participants and the trainers are valuable contacts in my network."
